We are coming to the end of the season for soccer in the Eastern Suburbs. This is the first year I have appreciated the effort and commitment of so many soccer heads across the area. Living right by Paine Reserve has been something special right under my nose until now. Big shout out to
Barnstoneworth!
The last game I watched was ' The Semi-Final of the Century.' - Barnstoneworth Vs Maroubra FC
What a great game of soccer! For the first half, the energy was Barnstoneworth, the team that calls Paine Reserve its home. Organized and energetic, they pushed hard and took the lead. But not for long. Each time they broke the defence and score, Maroubra managed to turn that energy to their own, pushing and matching, so that by halftime, the score had hit 2-2, with both sides displaying focus and determination. Barnstoneworth seemed particularly strong on the left flank.
The second half held more quality football. The challenge had been accepted and met and once again, Barnstoneworth came out charging, taking the lead. Maroubra were undeterred, and had soon grabbed a solid equaliser. This was turning into a mammoth battle. Despite further repeated attacks on both ends of the pitch, the full-time whistle marker a 3-3 scoreline. But this wasn't league - this was cup material!
Extra time commenced and you could sense the hunger in the air. Both teams came out fighting. The action moved from one end to the other, nobody backing down and an excellent level of professionalism by all concerned. Then it happened. Maroubra got the goal they had been pushing so hard for, and took the lead in the first half of extra time. Despite spirit and skill and perseverance, Barnstoneworth failed to score an equaliser, even pulling their goalie into attack by the end.
It was all up a great game witnessed by almost nobody other than the teams!
Tomorrow is the Division 1 Mens Grand Final at Hefron Park in Maroubra - looking forward to it.
